There are so many great DIY upgrades out there. Really custom trim pieces, beautifully executed facelifts, funky cool design, etc.
This project is not that. Haha! This is an easy DIY to make a standard Walmart bookcase look a little better and significantly improve function in our home.
We took 2×2 pine wood and cut 4 pieces for each shelf unit. The lengths were 6 inches, the height we wanted to increase the shelves.
To attach the legs to the bottom of the shelf, we first needed to make a rectangle frame. More 2×2 pieces were cut to fit the perimeter of the underside of the bookcase. The legs fit into the corners.
We screwed all the pieces together and gave the exposed edges of the legs a little sanding. Put the shelves back in their place (no pretty styling!) and enjoyed the taller shelving. Open to floor vents, easier to vacuum under…such a simple update!
We take breakfast very seriously at the Burris Bungalow. Some days are quick and easy [think cereal, toast and fruit], while equally as many days are spent perusing our varied cookbooks for just the right recipe. Especially breakfast…hands down the best way to start the day!
The recipe in this cookbook claims to make the “best ever fluffy pancakes”…and we agree!
The nun’s puffs shown above come from one of the best wedding gifts we ever received. Seriously a staple for every kitchen. [bonus: see the recipe below]
These waffles made with sour cream [or yogurt] have a flavor profile that is ah-mazing! Trust me, you will reach for this reference alllllllll the time.
Any one of these great recipes is a hit with us…enough to make the list of #burrisbites!
topping options: sugar/cinnamon, butter [can you tell we have a thing for REAL butter?], maple syrup, assorted fruit preserves and [our favorite]….honey.
Preheat oven to 375oF. grease [or butter] a 12-count muffin pan, making sure to cover the sides and rims of the cups.
In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium-low heat, then stir in the milk and bring the mixture to a light boil. add the flour all at once, stirring vigorously. continue to cook and stir the mixture until it comes together in a cohesive ball that does not separate. remove dough from heat, transfer to a bowl and allow to cool for at least 5 minutes.
Add the eggs, one at a time, beating for one minute after each addition. the mixture should be really thick, such as a stiff cake or muffin batter.
Divide the dough evenly and fill each prepared muffin cup about 2/3 full. [if using the cinnamon/sugar topping…sprinkle in on the muffin tops at this point].
Bake in center of oven for about 30 minutes. the puffs are tall, golden brown, crackly on top, and beautifully puffy. remove from pan immediately, and allow to cool slightly on a wire rack. serve while still hot or warm…especially lovely if you drizzle honey over them.
